Southern Ballet student in Alana Haines Awards Final!

Southern Ballet students recently participated in the prestigious Alana Haines Competition held in Wellington. This competition encourages young dancers from all of Australasia to dance in both classic and contemporary dance styles in front of an international panel of judges. Our participating students did very well and the experience was invaluable for these aspiring young dancers. Many thanks to the teachers for their extraordinary efforts. Congratulations to Juliette Gray  who was a junior finalists also receiving the Audience Choice Award and a scholarship for a weeks training at the Auckland Academy of Dance and to Alexander Bishop who was awarded a  wonderful opportunity being the recipient of a 4 week scholarship to the  Harid Conservatory in Florida USA.

Tasman Davids was with Southern Ballet until extending his training in Sydney in 2009. He returned to Southern in 2011 to prepare for auditions and was accepted into the Vaganova Academy of Ballet, (Kirov) in St Petersburg, Russia. This school trained Nijinsky, Pavlova, Nureyev, Baryshnikov and many of today's current stars. He was fortunate in receiving many scholarships and sponsorships so that he could attend. He flew to Russia in August 2011 after initiating and performing in a Gala Concert with the Dame Malvina Major Foundation to raise money for the Theatre Royal's restoration. Tasman is currently in his first year there and is the first Australasian to study in the full time program alongside the Russian students. In January he danced in the Nutcracker at the Mariinsky Theatre and is currently preparing for a performance at the theatre in the Hermitage.
